What happens when Amouage gives Quentin Bisch its most beloved Odyssey composition back and asks him to take it further? Guidance 46 is the Exceptional Extrait reading, dosed at 46 percent perfume oil against the 15 to 20 percent that normally defines the format. It reinterprets the house triad of rose, frankincense and ambergris, then adds pear, hazelnut and sandalwood on top.
It opens fresher than the original, pear and rose water lifted by pink pepper, with bitter almond and hazelnut giving it a marzipan edge underneath. Then saffron turns up the heat and rose, osmanthus and jasmine sambac bloom into something genuinely opulent. Then sandalwood, akigalawood, ambergris and vanilla take over, muskier and saltier than the eau de parfum, and run past twelve hours without effort.
At $550 for 100ml this is a divisive bottle, and opinion on it splits sharply. Exactly the wrong fragrance to blind-buy and exactly the right one to decant.
