What happens when Amouage takes the word blue, which the industry has spent two decades using to mean safe, and hands it to two perfumers with instructions to break it? Opus XV joins the Library Collection at 35 percent oil with ten weeks of ageing, and it is built entirely on contradiction. Nothing about it goes where you expect.
It opens radiant, mandarin and blackcurrant lit up by pink pepper, tart and juicy and almost friendly. Then the floor drops out: a fermented, animalic oud rolls in with frankincense and amber, cheesy and smoky and genuinely challenging. Then leather, oak, patchouli and creamy sandalwood hold that tension for ten to twelve hours, and the citrus strangely resurfaces on the way down.
