What happens when a British house commissions a scent for the 65th wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip? Christian Provenzano answered with Blue Sapphire, the flagship of the Boadicea line, presented in a cobalt glass falcon set with a certified sapphire and topped with gold-plated pewter. The juice had to justify the object.
It opens bright, lemon and marigold over a herbal sage and chamomile bed that reads almost like gin. Then saffron turns the temperature up and rose, jasmine and magnolia bloom into something unmistakably regal. Then the oud takes over, backed by patchouli and soft amber, and stays put for nine to twelve hours with real presence in a room.
Retail on the 100ml runs north of $900 at stockists. A 5ml decant is the honest way to find out whether the juice earns the bottle.
