What happens when a house built on sustainable oud puts the oud away entirely? Tropiques is Gael Montero's 2024 composition for Fragrance Du Bois, and it is the outlier in the wardrobe: no agarwood, no smoke, just an unapologetic tropical fruit basket. Vegan, made in the UK, and priced like everything else the house does.
It opens on bergamot and mandarin over a melange of tropical fruit that reads as pear, melon and strawberry rather than anything synthetic and loud. Then lavandin steps in with Mahonial and Rosyfolia, and this is the move that makes the fragrance work, because the lavender keeps the sugar from ever going cloying. Then caramel melts into amber and musk for nine to eleven hours of warm, sunset-coloured drydown.
