What happens when a maison founded in 1775 decides to build a collection around amber and nothing else? Ambre Rubis is the ruby of Houbigant's Collection Les Ambres, composed by Luca Maffei and Antoine Lie at extreme concentration and poured into a faceted red bottle with a sculptural gold cap. It is loud in the best way.

It opens on blood orange and pink pepper with incense already curling underneath, spiced and smoky from the first spray. Then cherry and rum arrive together, dark and liqueur-soaked rather than candied, with jasmine keeping the fruit from turning syrupy. Then amber, ambergris, cedarwood and fir balsam close it out for eight to ten hours of warm resinous trail that clings to a coat for days.
