Guerlain Angelique Noire Eau de Parfum
The vanilla that refuses to smell sweet.
What happens when Guerlain hands Daniela Andrier the one flower most perfumers underdose on purpose? Angelique Noire is built on the tension between angelica, which is green, bitter and almost medicinal, and the house vanilla that Guerlain has been perfecting since 1828. The brief was to make the two fight, and then make the fight beautiful.
It opens cold and herbal, angelica cut with a wet pear that keeps it from turning sharp. Then pink pepper lifts the whole thing and caraway drags a faint bread note through the middle. Then the vanilla arrives, and it is not dessert. It is resinous, powdery, wrapped in cedar, and it holds for seven to nine hours without ever going syrupy.
The full bottle from the L'Art et la Matiere collection runs well past $300. Start with 2ml and find out whether you are an angelica person before you commit to the flacon.
