What happens when Le Labo builds a fragrance it will only sell in one city? Vanille 44 is the Paris City Exclusive, composed by Alberto Morillas in 2007 and locked to the Paris labs for eleven months of every year. It escapes worldwide for a few weeks each August and September, and then it disappears again.
It opens with aldehydes and bergamot, airy and almost soapy-bright, nothing like a vanilla at all. Then incense creeps in and the vanilla finally shows itself, resinous and smoky rather than sweet, closer to bourbon in a barrel than sugar in a bowl. Then guaiac wood, amber and musk pull it in tight against the skin for seven to nine hours, where it quietly outperforms its own volume.
The 100ml is $555 and available for roughly six weeks a year. A 5ml decant is how most people ever get to own it.
